Foreigners who are interested in obtaining Malaysian citizenship should know that they can apply for this, but it is important to find out that there are special regulations that are customarily imposed here. Our team of company formation representatives in Malaysia can offer assistance to both natural persons and foreign investors who are interested in receiving citizenship in this country.

Obtain Malaysian citizenship through registration

One of the legal options through which a person can become a Malaysian citizen refers to the registration process, started by the individual interested in receiving this right. The registration procedure is available for persons who are citizens by law but have not yet begun the registration process.

This is available for persons who wereborn in Malaysia or outside the country and who have at least one parent who is a Malaysian citizen. At the same time, it is necessary to know that the procedure is applicable only to persons aged below 21 years old. Also, it is compulsory for the individual to know basic Malay

Those who are interested to obtain Malaysian citizenship through this procedure can receive in-depth information from the National Registration Office

Our team of company formation agents in Malaysia can offer legal guidance for the procedure.

Obtain Malaysian citizenship through naturalization in 2022

Foreigners who were not born out of Malaysian parents can also obtain citizenship here through naturalization. It is important to know that Malaysian legislation does not recognize dual or multiple citizenship, as is the case in other states. As such, the person should be prepared to keep only Malaysian citizenship when applying through this procedure.

The legal requirements referring to naturalization are the following:

•    the applicant has an age above 21 years old;
•    the applicant lived in Malaysia for more than a decade;
•    the applicant is fluent in Malay

The application will be handled under the provisions of the Citizenship Rules 1964. The right to citizenship for foreigners is limited to those who have spent at least 10 years in Malaysia as residents. So, if you plan to move to Malaysia in 2022, you will first have to obtain a visa, have a residency permit which will grant the right to permanent residency (after living here for several years) and, after 10 years have passed, you can obtain the citizenship if other conditions are satisfied, such as knowing the local language and culture. If you qualify in 2022 for Malaysian citizenship, you will need to address to National Registry Office, where the procedure is carried out.

If you have decided on doing business in Malaysia, our recommendation is to also contract an accounting firm in this sense. You can rely on the support offered by our accountants in Malaysia and more precisely you can benefit from payroll services, audits, bookkeeping, support for tax registration, and preparation of annual financial statements.
